Brazil Fights Against Deforestation

Deforestation in Brazil

Summary:
Brazil is undergoing major deforestation issues. So far it's lost about 20% of it's forests. Over the years there have been struggles between citizens and congress regarding how much deforestation is taking place. People have been trying to get laws put out or other plans to help protect the environment.

Not too long ago there was a bill that was being passed allowing farmers to gain more land. However, this would result in even more trees being demolished. The citizens of Brazil though, fought with the congress to get the bill to change a bit. Luckily, they won and saved most of the forests from any more harsh destruction.

Reaction:
It's great to see people stick up for something like this. Knowing that there was actually going to be a bill passed basically saying that deforestation is okay is crazy! If they were going to follow through with it I could only imagine what the forests would look like afterwards. Forests are extremely important for habitats for animals so poor creatures are either forced to find a new place to live or end up suffering. Overall I think its great that the congress agreed to make some of those changes to the bill.

Questions:
1) What did the bill say exactly?
2) How do you feel about the bill without the changes? do you think that the changes were better or worse?
3) How can people help lower the deforestation rate?

  1. Reaction: I think it is sad that deforestation happends at all and knowing that there are still laws which allow it to happen, is terrible. I belive more people are becoming aware of deforestation actually effects the animals and plants that live there. So, there is hope that destruction of those types of habitats might stop. But it is bad that some governments just dont care enough or choose to make money over protecting special habitats.

Question: What animals live in the forests of Brazil and have there been any studies about how deforestation has effected them so far.

  2. Reaction: I am so happy to hear that many people stood up for what they believed was right. Deforestation is a real problem and it is scary to hear about it happening in Brazil, especially since that is where the Amazon rainforest is located. I am also so used to hearing about people causing harm to the environment, instead of doing good. I am glad that Brazil's people fought together to end this cruel act, and I hope that we can find another valuable resource to use, instead of trees.

Expansion: I found this article about deforestation in the Amazon.

  4. Reaction: It is awesome to see all thos people standing up for what is right exspecially against their own gov. It is horrible to see all that forest gone. Such a huge amount at that, and to add one to that most of our rain forests are in south america and 20% of Brazils destroyed is crazy.
3: I think people can help lower the rate by keeping up what they are doing, protesting and fioghting for it to be lowered

  5. Opinion:
Wow, I always knew deforestation was a big issue, but I never knew people are trying to pass laws to make it right. I am glad the people stuck up for what us right. It is a shame to see all of that forest being destroyed.

    Expansion:
Here is an article from national geographic about the deforestation of the amazon rainforest.

    Questions:
    3) People can help lower the deforestation rate by using alternative woods that arent being taken from the rainforest. Also, to grant farmers land somewhere else other than the rainforest.
My Question 1) What is the best way to deal with deforestation?
